Introduction ------------ WyeSoft Peg Solitaire is a lightweight, portable version of the traditional board game, peg solitaire. Players are able to choose from 11 different solitaire boards, including the standard English and French/European boards. There is also a board editor feature which allows players to create and save their own boards. Peg solitaire ------------- Peg solitaire, or simply solitaire (not to be confused with the card game, Patience, which is known as solitaire in the US and Canada), is a traditional singleplayer board game involving a board (usually cross-shaped) with many holes in it, and pegs which are placed into all of the holes except for the central one. The player must remove as many pegs as possible by "jumping" over them with a horizontally or vertically adjacent peg, into the adjacent hole on the opposite side. This is the only type of move allowed. The ultimate goal is to end up with only one peg remaining, and to have that peg positioned in the board's central hole. This is known as the central game. How to play ----------- First, select the type of board you want to play on from the dropdown menu in the upper-left corner of the window. If you have not yet started a game, the board will change immediately; if you have, then you will need to click the "New Game" button after making your board selection. You can start playing as soon as your chosen board is displayed on the screen. To move, simply click a peg and then click the hole you wish to move it to. The status bar below the board display will show how many pegs remain on the board. When no more moves are possible, the status bar will display the text, "GAME OVER", or "GAME COMPLETE" if you have achieved the goal of the central game. You can save your game at any time by clicking the "Save Game" button and entering a filename. You can then reload it at a later time by clicking the "Load Game" button and selecting it in the file browser window. If you close WyeSoft Peg Solitaire, start a new game, or load a game, without saving your current game first, it will be saved automatically with the filename, "Autosave.sol". Board editor ------------ You can create new boards or edit existing ones with the built-in board editor feature. Click the "Edit Board" button to switch to board editor mode. Click the "New Board" button to clear the board space and start with a blank board area. If you want to edit an existing board, click the "Load Board" button and choose a board in the file browser window. Now, right-click a square to change it to an empty space (i.e. not part of the board), or left-click it to cycle through four different states: 1. a peg 2. an empty central hole (a hole on which to finish the game) 3. a normal empty hole 4. a peg placed in a central hole "Central holes" do not necessarily have to be in the centre of your custom boards. You may also place multiple central holes, giving players a choice of which one to finish on. On the other hand, you do not necessarily have to place a central hole at all. When you have finished making your board, you can save it by clicking the "Save Board" button and entering a filename. Click the "Stop Editing" button to exit board editor mode. You will now be able to select your board from the dropdown menu in the upper-left corner of the window. Graphics modification --------------------- It is possible to change WyeSoft Peg Solitaire's graphics just by replacing the icon files in the "Graphics" subfolder of the game's main folder. The filenames are as follows: Blank.ico - empty, non-board squares (only used in board editor mode) Hole.ico - normal empty holes HoleCentral.ico - empty central holes Peg.ico - pegs PegCentral.ico - pegs placed in central holes (only used in board editor mode) PegSelected.ico - currently selected peg All replacement graphics files must be in the Windows icon (.ico file) format with dimensions of 32x32 pixels. Portability ----------- WyeSoft Peg Solitaire is portable and does not require installation. Place the folder anywhere you want it and run PegSol.exe.
